The Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil
Many people know that peppermint is a great breath freshener, but did you know all of the other benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil (EO)? There are quite a few that may surprise you. This is an oil that is an essential for every household.
Not only does it smell great, it's antibacterial and antifungal, as well as a natural astringent. Peppermint EO has historically been shown to aide numerous health problems such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, indigestion, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, morning sickness, gas, colds, coughs, sinus infections, respiratory infections, menstrual cramps, and headaches. It is also rich in Vitamin A&C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium, Calciium, and Copper.
Peppermint EO can also be used to repel some types of insects. It can be used to repel ants, spiders, and mosquitos, as well as mice. Just add to a spray bottle of water and spray where needed, but be careful around pets, and DO NOT use around cats. Peppermint EO is toxic to cats.
Do you suffer from joint or muscle pain but hate the smell of over the counter pain relief creams? Peppermint EO can ease the pain due to it's ability to increase oxygen flow and blood circulation. It can be added to unscented lotion or with your favorite carrier oil (fractionated coconut oil has been shown to be the most effective) and just rub into the skin as needed. Great for an after-workout rub.
Peppermint EO is also great for the skin. It helps control acne and brightens the skin. This and it's antibacterial and astringent properties is why we use Peppermint EO in our face wash and face scrub for glowing skin.
As you can see, Peppermint EO is a must-have in every home, but make sure it is a pure, unadulterated oil. Organic is best to ensure there are no pesticides or other chemicals. Also, Peppermint EO should NOT be used on young infants, and young children.
